Every day is a good day

Pandemic, extreme weather, struggling economy and even war. Endless gloomy news stories just keep coming. Even though, Zen teaches us that every day is a good day. Really?

It is about opening your eyes to the ultimate truth of life. There is no such a day when the way to the ultimate truth of life is closed. Thus you cannot blame anything but yourself about your uncertainty.

日々是れ好日

臨黄ネットの今月の禅語から。

疫病に、天変地異に、不景気、そして戦争。暗いニュースばかり続く毎日。その中にあってさえ、毎日毎日が、結構な一日だとはこれいかに。

これは、この世の真実は常に開かれていて、それを体得できない日はないということです。つまり、自らの不明は、自分以外の何かのせいにはできないわけです。

The headline describes the extent of the breakthrough required to reach the enlightenment.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been so many occasions where common beliefs before the pandemic are overturned. Sometimes it could be hard to swallow for established researchers or reporters of refuted theories.

They might have so much vested interests of prolonged periods based on those theories. However, the “truth” a human believes and the true state of reality could have a huge distance.

鶴は飛ぶ千尺の雪、龍は起つ一潭の冰

臨黄ネットの今月の禅語から。

300 メートルもの厚さの雪を突き破って飛び立つ鶴に、底まで凍りついた淵を突き抜けて天に登る龍。悟りに至るには、それぐらい常識の壁を突破しなければならないという心構えです。

コロナ禍では、次々これまでの常識がひっくりがえるようなことが知られてきましたが、真実を追求する立場のはずの人々、知識を広く伝える立場のはずの人々がかえってこれまでの見解や主張に固執して、新しい知見を受け入れられないでいる様子が時々見受けられます。

もちろん、確信していた見解や主張に基づいて、これまで長年心血を注いできた事業が、未曾有の事態でひっくり返されてしまうのには忸怩たる思いがあるとは思いますが、もともと、人間が思いこみがちな「真実」とこの世の実相の間には、しばしば大きな隔たりがあるのかもしれません。

The subject describes how time flies. Zen’s purpose is to comprehend the universal truth of the world in just one grasp from the immediate and present reality.

Throughout the Covid 19 pandemic, the world has seen how delusions keep people from seeing their immediate and present dangers and make them falling into sufferings which could have been prevented. It is quite opposite from what Zen teaches.

金烏急玉兎速

臨黄ネットの今月の禅語から。

金烏とは太陽に住むと謂われるカラスで、玉兎は月に住むと謂われるウサギなので、時の経つのが速いことを表した表現です。

禅では、とにかく眼前の直接の問題の中で、全世界の普遍の道理を丸ごと掴むことを目指すので、逡巡を許しません。思案を巡らせている間にも世界の様相は千変万化していくからです。ましてや、世界の実相から外れた虚像に囚われるに至っては。

コロナ禍は、人類にまさにその禅定の能力を要求しているのではないでしょうか。

The sound of the stream is nothing but the long broad tongue of Buddha’s sermon

From this month’s Zen words in Japanese site of Rinzai-Obaku Zen.

The long broad tongue is one of the 32 legendary features of the Buddha. It symbolises his words encompassed everything and left nothing unexplained.

The words in the title means, I think, the Buddha’s sermon is nothing but the natural truth of the universe. Although mankind has learned much more about the natural truth of the universe since the age of the Buddha, why are we still suffering from earthly desires?

溪聲便是廣長舌

臨黄ネットの今月の禅語から。

お釈迦様には、三十二相、32 の優れた特徴があると言われてますが、そのひとつが大舌相（廣長舌）です。文字通りの意味は、広くて長い舌ですが、お釈迦様の言うことに嘘がなく、真実を余すところなく語り尽くせるという意味だそうです。

この禅語では、渓流のせせらぎが、お釈迦様の教えそのものであると言い切ってます。これは、お釈迦様の教えは自然の真理そのものに他ならないという意味だと思います。お釈迦様の時代より、人間ははるかに自然の真理について多くを知ったはずなのに、人間の煩悩が尽きることがないのはなぜでしょうね。

I found these Zen words interesting as I thought it well described the relationship between the truth and a piece of information about it.

魚行けば水濁り、鳥飛べば毛落つ

Whakakitenga

The Chinese zodiac goes around the cycle in 12 years. Its first zodiac is the year of the mouse as with this year, 2020. Coincidentally, I participated in an annual photo exhibition every year in the last cycle, from 2008 to 2019. Above is the gallery of my exhibits. They ware not themed with the animal of the corresponding year. Maybe in the next round.

干支一巡り

今年は干支の最初の子年ですが、たまたま、前の一巡り、2008 年から 2019 年まで毎年、ある写真展に参加していたことに気づきました。上にあるのが展示作品のギャラリーです。干支の動物がテーマになっているわけではないですが、今年からの一巡では検討してみます。
